Retire From The Corporate World

This week, we celebrated the retirement of a Senior Manager in my division at work. He had been with the company for 30 years and left exactly on the last day of his job.

This is something I do not and will not go through. I am determined to leave my job as soon as I can. The company means nothing to me, except from paying me for the work done.

The longer I am here, the more I realized this job is not going to feed me forever.

10 years ago, when the division was smaller, whenever there was a demand by the company, I forced myself to pick up new skills, take up extra work to fill in the demand.

Yes, I got promoted some years back but that’s it. They have found someone who can do the job so well, it will be silly to move her from this position to do something else.

So ever since, it was somebody else got promoted. Guess what? I do not care. Once you retire from the job, you are a nobody to anyone.

While my colleagues still think about getting higher position, higher pay, more authority etc., I started planning my exit from the corporate world.

Here are the steps I have put down to begin with:

  1. Find out exactly what are my expenditures to have a comfortable and protected lifestyle.
  2. Sort out my financials. I am still paying mortgage on an apartment and also a car. I do not have any outstanding on my credit cards.
  3. Note down additional income streams i.e. rental, dividends and interests.
  4. Network with the right people. Those who recognized my work and wanted me to join them as a freelancer.

Meanwhile, I need to learn some new skills which will help me in the future. There were plans to study to earn a certificate or two.

The pandemic made it impossible and I am still waiting for my turn to be vaccinated.

Lets pray for this to be over soon.
